#483 - Where Do You Even Start When You're Starting Over?

It usually hits at night. The house is quiet, and the question you've been avoiding shows up again:

How do I start over?

Where do I even look? Who am I looking for? After all these years, do I even know how to do this?

I asked myself those same questions. I didn't have the answers, and I didn't know where to start. So I did what most people do. I looked in a lot of the wrong places, for a lot of the wrong people.

If that's where you are, you're not broken. You're just uninformed. And that's something we can fix.

What 20 Years of Managing Money Taught Me About Love

I'm Rick Soetebier, co-author of Dating Backward, and for more than a decade I've coached midlife singles through dating again. Looking back, I should have recognized my own mistakes sooner. Before I became a coach, I spent over 20 years as a financial advisor, and I watched the same pattern play out with money.

Most of my clients were smart people. They knew the rules. Don't panic when the market drops. Stick to the plan.

But following the rules is easy when nothing is at stake.

I'll never forget one client who sold his entire portfolio on a particularly ugly day in the market. When I found out a few hours later, I scrambled to put it back together before one bad afternoon could undo years of careful planning.

He wasn't foolish. He was scared. And fear made the decision for him.

My job wasn't to be smarter than my clients. It was to help them step back from the emotions of investing their hard-earned money long enough to make decisions with a clear head.

Dating works the same way. When you're excited about someone new, stepping back from those feelings, even temporarily, lets you see the relationship clearly instead of seeing what you hope is there.

What That Looks Like in Real Life

Imagine you've been seeing someone for a few weeks. You really like him. The dates have been good. You're beginning to imagine where this could go.

Then he cancels at the last minute. Twice. Each time with a reasonable excuse.

And reliability is one of your Must Haves.

It's not necessarily a reason to walk away. But it deserves your attention.

Your emotions are involved now, and you're tempted to explain it away because you don't want to lose someone you like. This is the dating version of watching your portfolio drop and wanting to sell everything. The feeling gets loud, and the plan gets quiet.

That's where coaching helps. We slow it down and ask:

What do you actually know, and what are you assuming?

"You told me reliability was important to you. Why are you negotiating with it now?"

"Are you choosing this person, or are you afraid of not having anyone?"

I don't make the decision. You do. But you don't have to make it alone.

What Changes Through Coaching

You move from "I don't even know where to start" to "I know what I'm looking for, and where to look."

From "What if I walk away and never find anyone else?" to "Being alone is hard, but that doesn't make this relationship right for me."

And most importantly, from "I'm not sure I can trust my own judgment" to "I can trust myself to make a thoughtful decision."

It's the same shift I had to make myself. Not dependence on a coach. Confidence in yourself.

Coaching Isn't for Everyone

If you want someone to choose your partner for you, I'm not your guy. If you want a guarantee, no honest coach can give you one.

But if you're open to learning, and you'd like an experienced guide beside you instead of figuring it out the hard way like I did, coaching may be exactly what you need.

Because the goal isn't just to find another relationship. It's to make smarter decisions and give yourself a real chance at extraordinary love.
