#338 - Just for laughs.

dating humor

I’ve been divorced for nearly 12 year now. I’ve had more than my share of dates and a couple of short-term relationships thrown in for good measure.

First dates rarely get me excited anymore. I’ve just been on too many and know that it’s going to take a rare woman to attract my attention permanently.

Good looks and a great figure are no longer as important to me. As we age most of us gain a few pounds and a few inches here and there.

These days I’m looking to see that she has full set of teeth. They don’t even have to be her originals. If she has her own hair, that’s a big plus.

She has to have the desire to get off the couch. Let’s get out and enjoy some fresh air whether that’s working in the yard, taking a bike ride or going for a walk.

It’s always great if she can make me laugh and vise versa. In these often trying times being able to laugh with and at each other is so important.

To me, it’s so important to be able to find humor in some of the silliest, dumbest, and simplest places.

Make sure you have a funny bone.
If you want to have mostly serious conversation, find someone that can have great intellectual conversations with you.

If you like to laugh, make sure you find someone that knows how to make you laugh. This single trait seems to be very unique and special.

Not everyone is going to have your sense of humor. Sacrificing your sense of humor when they don’t “get you” to accommodate someone else is a recipe for relationship trouble.

It may not seem like much up front but it becomes very lonely when you can’t tell you favorite jokes because your partner doesn’t get it and looks at you like you just fell off the turnip truck.

There are just some people that make laughing easy. You have a common sense of humor whether it’s sarcastic, cerebral, slapstick, or just plain goofy. It’s awesome to connect this way.

Have you ever had a joke in your head that you thought was hysterical and the moment it came out of your mouth it just wasn’t as funny? LOL That’s when I turn red in the face and say, “That sounded a lot funnier in my head.”

Make sure your humor IS funny.
There are times when jokes or humor at the expense of someone else can be funny. However, when it continues relentlessly, becomes hurtful, or is insulting, it’s no longer humor.

It becomes toxic. If this is your type of humor, you’re going have a limited circle of friends and loved ones.

If you have to hurt someone to think you’re funny, it’s time for a reality check. You don’t deserve to date anyone!

You should seek professional help to discover why you think it’s okay to hurt those that are closest to you to try to be funny.

Humor is the best medicine.
Being able to laugh (including at yourself) is a great quality in any person.

This week, rather than complaining about all that’s wrong with the world, let’s all search for a little humor in our lives.

What can you do to make someone else smile or, better yet, laugh this week?

If you’ve lost your sense of humor with dating, can’t pick a good date to save your life, or just struggle figuring out what you want in your next relationship, check out my book, Dating Backward: A practical guide to dating and finding your soul mate. It will give you some great insight to becoming an Intentional Dater.

Until next week, have a great and blessed day.
